When pollution becomes something unavoidable nowadays, many people believe they are safer from polluted air inside the building than outside.

Is it true that indoor air fresher than the outdoor?

The fact is even inside the car or a building, air can still be polluted.

The sources for indoor pollution are the products in home or office, such as the carpet, paint, wallpaper, ceiling tiles or numerous other synthetically-produced products that release volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde and benzene which makes the indoor air less healthy.

Other chemical products that pollute the air are perfumes, hair sprays, furniture polish, glues, air fresheners, moth repellents, wood preservatives, and many other products used in the house.
The main health effect from these products is the irritation of the eye, nose and throat. In more severe cases there may be headaches, nausea and loss of coordination. In the long term, some of the pollutants are suspected to damage to the liver and other parts of the body.

Smoke from cigarettes, is also dangerous and known to cause cancer. The other effect is ranging from burning eyes, nose, and throat irritation to cancer, bronchitis, severe asthma, and a decrease in lung function.

The worst fact is, due to the global warming, most people prefer to stay in close room with air conditioner inside. What these people do not know is the air in a closed room (without natural circulation) is a recycled air through an air conditioner which contains only positively charged ions. While our body also need negatively charged oxygen atoms as well as the positive one.
Negatively charged ions help lift the mood and give people energy. It also can refresh body’s cell and as a result the temperature of the body is lower, the lung functions better and it helps kill bacteria and viruses.

The unfortunate reality is that most people spend about 90% of their day indoors where they are breathing the positively charged ions, not receiving fresh air or gaining those much needed negatively charged ions. Nature generates negative ions through tumbling water, such as the ocean or waterfalls, and the electricity generated from thunder and lightning storms.

When it is too impossible to go outside very often, the alternative is to put some indoor plants, both in home and workplace. It has been proven by NASA scientists that houseplants capture the volatile organic chemicals from the air while emitting a good source of oxygen. An indoor water feature will also create negative ions that help to recharge and purify the air.
